Good Morning Ranches Ladies. Hope you have a great week.
People across the United Kingdom and around the world have been joining in the long weekend of celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, marking her remarkable 70 years on the throne.
Here in Dubai, there have been a number of events to mark the occasion. The QE2, the iconic cruise ship named after the Queen and now refurbished as a floating hotel docked in Port Rashid, hosted Jubilee events. Carole and Leila went to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Variety Show in the QE2’s theatre.
Vivienne and her husband Derick had a great time at the Platinum Jubilee Celebratory Dinner in the QE2’s Ballroom.

What is your Superpower?
by Ansie van Der Walt
My children used to ask me that if I was a superhero, which super power would I like to have? I always say to be invisible. To be a fly on the wall. Just imagine where you can go and what you can see and hear if you don’t have to explain yourself…Alas, now that I am on the wise side of fifty, it seems my wish has come true. I am invisible. Nobody seems to notice or acknowledge women once they cross that magic bridge of middle age. We have been downgraded to old ladies, aunties, or grannies. Of course, it has its benefits – we don’t have to worry about creepy unwanted attention anymore. At last, we can walk down a street or sit alone at a café without a second glance or unasked-for comments. Don’t get me wrong – I love being the age I am. It is liberating to be free from the angst of youth, to stop worrying about what other people think, and to finally feel comfortable with who I am. I can now give and command attention from those I feel worthy of my time and energy while disregarding the rest – and not feel guilty about it.
It has happened more than a few times, that when I interview creative, smart, accomplished women, they admit to me that they don’t want their pictures published. They don’t show their faces. When I probe a bit, it is always because they fear that once people know that they are an older woman, their work won’t be taken seriously anymore. Unfortunately, many people still believe that anything to do with needlework, textiles, sewing, and handcraft is granny work or housewife duties, and accomplished women don’t want their work to be classified as granny work. Of course, we who work in this field know better but we don’t always work hard enough to publicly disprove this stereotype.I had a recent conversation with an artist who is an accomplished businesswoman, who has two degrees, who is teaching at the university, and who has recently published her first book. She did not want her picture in the book because she feared that her embroidery art will be dismissed as granny work once people realise she is not young anymore.*
I told her that if we don’t show ourselves and claim our place in the world, we are feeding the stereotype, we are erasing ourselves, reinforcing our invisibility. It is up to us to show ourselves. To claim our place as artists and accomplished members of society. I am not a selfie person. I don’t show myself just for the sake of it, and I rarely follow anyone on social media who only posts photos of themselves. But I believe in owning our own power, in showing our worth, in claiming our space. How would people know how bright, smart, and creative we are, if we don’t show ourselves? This is our superpower. Making ourselves visible.

Good Morning Ranches Ladies. Hope you have a great week!
Poetry Circle by Yasmeen
Poetry is an art of word play that reaches deep into your soul and takes you on a journey through a kaleidoscope of emotions and perceptions. It helps you see through the mind of the poet and compels you to view the world, it’s senses and concepts with an alternative perspective. My passion for poetry lead me to join the Ranches Ladies poetry club recently despite my profession as a Radiologist.
I must say that it has indeed been a great delight to share and analyze the different genres of poetry whilst cultivating new friendships. We meet once a month at Carol’s lovely house and enjoy 2 hours of stimulating poetry and tea (with some amazing macaroons and cake).
The discussions are broad minded, thought provoking, and range from some history about the poet and his/her life experience as well as the poignancy and emotions behind his poems. We collect poems based on a common theme and Carol makes sure that we don’t sway too far off course. We have poems ranging from themes such as love to seasons, colors and even food.
Since we are a multi cultural group, we often realize how much there is that we can learn from each other.
I recommend it for anyone with an inclination towards poetry and am sure it will be well worth your time.
Dr. Yasmeen Ul Mulk
The theme of the next Poetry Circle on Monday 30th May is ‘Food and Drink.’

Good Morning Ranches Ladies. Hope you have a great week
Walking Circle by Alex Meyer
When I arrived here in Dubai more than 8 years ago as a newbie to the Middle-East, the first circle I joined was the Walking Circle. What a good decision it was! Not only has walking helped me improve my fitness level, but I met a lot of lovely ladies who gave me so many tips about life in Dubai and how to cope as expat in the UAE. Actually the Walking Circle should be re-named as the “Walking and Talking” circle, as both are so important for us.
Walking is not only a very effective, but a smooth cardio exercise. It is also very good for maintaining bone density without doing harm to the joints, like running can do. Moreover, walking is perfect for toning the body and a real calorie burner – one mile burns around 100 calories. Walking benefits not only the muscles, but also the soul and chases away all the cobwebs.
It is such a nice feeling to walk in the fresh morning air along the Ranches footpaths, through the well-kept greenery which is very pretty and home to so many birds. By the way – now the quails are having their chicks and it so sweet to spot the tiny, fluffy creatures.
After the walk we have usually coffee at Costa’s and a well-deserved treat – a healthy smoothie or an unhealthy croissant – and we update each other on the latest events like cinema, new nice shops or where to go on the weekend.
Now I run the Walking Circle, with help from Mandy Peden when I am away.
There is no better start to the week!
The Walking Circle are meeting at 7amonMondays outside Arabian Ranches 1 retail centre main entrance. When the temperatures soar in summer it may be possible to start walking inside a local mall instead.
If you would like to join the Walking Circle please email circles.ranches.ladies@gmail.com, or send Alex a message through the RL members WhatsApp group.

I have been running the Art Circle for Ranches Ladies for last four years. We meet every Thursday from 10am to 12noon. I started the Art Circle with Silk Painting and now we have moved to Acrylic, although one can work on any medium. We have made some wonderful paintings and have created special friendships over the years.
A little introduction about myself – I’m a professional counsellor and an artist. My passion for art started at an early age. I enjoy all forms of creative art, and have worked on various mediums like oil, acrylic, silk, watercolors, pencil colors, glass painting, resin art, embroidery, zentangles, and mandalas. I have held several exhibitions in Dubai and India, with outstanding responses.
Since I find art extremely calming and therapeutic and a great way to express one’s creativity, I wanted to offer a similar experience for others. Running the Art Circle has been a most fulfilling experience to see members grow into great artists and create wonderful pieces of art.
We have done masterpieces by great artists like Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Klimt and others to understand different styles and techniques. We have covered real life to still life, and Impressionism to Pointillism. Ladies are free to bring their own ideas to paint, and what they create and express through their work is unique.
Members have often expressed that they find these classes de-stressing, calming, warm and positive. They enjoy painting in a group, with a lot of mutual appreciation. They also feel inspired to visit museums and exhibitions and learn more about art. They miss these classes when they travel and some of them paint even when they are away.
I see great passion in the Art Circle and I would encourage more ladies to join and experience it.
