Author Talk: ‘How I came to be the UAE’ with Paulette Buizer

On Tuesday April 23^rd2024, Ranches Ladies were delighted to welcome the author Paulette Buizer to present and talk about her book HOW I CAME TO BE THE UAE.

Paulette, a native of Canada and a teacher of English, accepted a post to teach English in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, ending up teaching in public schools in Al Ain for 8 years. She found that the teaching methods were somewhat outdated and she spent a lot of time producing her own teaching materials to make her lessons more interesting in an effort to engage the students further.

During this time she realized that her Emirati students actually knew very little about their ancestors and their heritage, while she herself was very curious about the history of this area and how it came to be the amazing country it is today. The idea for a book was born!

Returning to Canada, she embarked on a programme of research dating back to the 1880’s when this land was mostly populated by nomadic Bedouin tribes, and Abu Dhabi and Dubai were small fishing villages. The introduction of pearl diving then began a lucrative pearl trade between the Emirates and other countries .

Then oil was discovered! Changes took place at a terrific speed bringing us to the country we know today and which many of us call home, thanks to the hospitality and generosity of the Emiratis.

Paulette pays homage to the late Sheikh Zayed ,who never lost his love of the desert and old traditions yet managed to wisely guide the leaders of the 7 Trucial States, as they were called at the time, to become united in 1971 and move forward together under his rule.

The narrator of the story is the UAE itself , displaying pride, like a mother, in the achievements of its people. With excellent illustrations by Paulette’s niece, Emily Baker, the combination makes for an easy, informative read.

Back in the UAE to tour and promote her book in schools, we wish Paulette the very best of luck.

(I bought two books for my grandchildren who, although living here, know very little about the history of their host country!)

Good morning Ranches Ladies.

We hope you and your family are safe and well after the downpour and flooding we experienced in the UAE last week.

Here’s hoping for some calmer weather this week!

Message from RL President

In the past week, the rains and storm have impacted our lives in various ways. In the aftermath of such extreme weather, for some of us, the impact of the storms has been particularly challenging. Homes, businesses, and livelihoods have been affected, and the road to recovery may seem daunting. To those who have experienced loss or hardship, RL extends its heartfelt sympathy. The past few days have been a testament to the strength and unity of our community. We’ve seen neighbours reaching out to help one another, strangers offering support, and countless acts of kindness that remind us of the compassion that binds us together. Despite the disruptions and inconveniences caused by the inclement weather, the spirit of solidarity and empathy has shone through. I am sure that as a community, we will emerge from this stronger, more united, and more compassionate than ever before.

Dubai Comedy Festival

Dubai’s annual Comedy Festival is now on until 21st April.

Dubai Singers and Orchestra Concert

The Dubai Singers and Orchestra will be performing Verdi’s Requiem, considered to be one of the greatest compositions in classical music, in Abu Dhabi, at the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Sunday 21st April.

The Festival of Colours

Last Wednesday, the Poetry Circle was on the topic of Colours, and it was also the Indian festival of Holi. The members shared some lovely poems, including this one written by Poetry Circle member, Rajul.

The festival of colours in India is called Holi

Where you can see red, yellow, and pink in full glory

It indicates the arrival of spring

A lot of excitement it will bring

I wait for this festival of colours each year

To celebrate it with those who are near and dear

Big, small, young, old, girl or a boy

They all come out to sing and dance with joy

They put colour on each other’s face

And carry it out with dignity and grace

Everyone is out to bond and have fun

Forgive and forget all hurts and be one

Every time we celebrate Holi, we make memories to cherish

The significance of Holi is that good prevails, and evil shall perish.

Ramadan Recipes

Emirati Luqaimat

We had some delicious food at our Ranches Ladies Pre-Ramadan Iftar and some of the ladies have been kind enough to share their recipes. This week, we have luqaimat from the UAE. Luqaimat means “small bites” in Arabic and that’s exactly what they are: small bites of sweetness.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup all purpose flour
½ tsp instant yeast
½ cup milk powder
2 tbsp sugar
½ tsp cardamom powder
pinch of saffron
lukewarm water as needed approximately 1/3 cup
oil for deep frying
1/2 cup date syrup or more for dressing
1 tbsp sesame seeds for spinkling

INSTRUCTIONS

Add all purpose flour, yeast, milk powder, sugar, cardamom powder and saffron in a bowl and mix well.
Slowly add water while gently mixing with your hand to get a sticky batter. The batter will be more like a dough than batter.
Cover with a muslin cloth and allow to rest for a couple of hours in a warm place till it has doubled in size
Heat oil and drop the batter by spoonful. (Dipping the spoon in water in between prevents the batter from sticking to the spoon and makes it easier to drop.
Roll the dropped balls with a slotted spoon in oil for even cooking. Fry till they are dark golden brown in color.
Remove from oil and place on a kitchen towel.
Place them in a serving bowl and pour the date syrup on top, sprinkle with sesame seeds

New Circle – Cooking with Leila

Leila Barakat’s Culinary Journey

Leila Barakat Mukhaimer brings a wealth of culinary expertise and international experience to the table.

Leila is a member of the International Culinary Institute “La Chaine des Rotisseurs” in Paris, and has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the American University of Beirut and a Diplome de la cuisine Francaise from France.

Leila’s culinary journey began with a strong foundation in both International and Arabic cuisine. Throughout her career, Leila has continued to expand her culinary horizons, attending a culinary course in Thai cuisine at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok in 2005, further enriching her repertoire of flavors and techniques. Leila’s passion for healthy eating and sharing her knowledge has led her to conduct hands-on culinary demonstrations for prestigious institutions and food festivals in Dubai and worldwide. Leila is also an accomplished author, having written the internationally acclaimed cookbook “Dishes Made Delicious” in 2003, and published weekly articles for Al Hayat newspaper in London, U.K. in the 1990’s. With a diverse range of interests spanning sports, travel, and a passion for exploring different cultures, Leila brings a unique perspective and boundless enthusiasm to her cooking demonstrations, inspiring others to embark on their own culinary adventures.

Coffee Morning Presentation:

An overview of reloved furniture.dxb with Ewa

On Tuesday 19th March 2024, Ewa from Reloved Furniture Dubai joined The Ranches Ladies to talk about upcycling furniture. Ewa took us through the reasons why upcycling makes sense. It is sustainable, but more than that it gives us a chance to turn old pieces that may have sentimental value into unique works of art. She explained to us what to look for in furniture. Solid wood is important, and it needs to have good bones, meaning that the frame needs to be strong and of high quality.

Once you have decided which piece you would like to transform, Ewa has a vast array of options and suggestions. Changing the colour, adding legs and even sawing pieces in half to create something new. At Reloved Furniture.dxb, Ewa uses many techniques to create different effects so you can choose something that suits your style and interior. She encouraged us to use bright colours for smaller accent pieces in the same way that you might add some fun-coloured throw pillows to your couch and to have fun! Decoupage is one of her favourite techniques to use and a way to make a piece truly unique. Here are some lovely before and after examples of her previous work that show how talented she is:

We were also told about the actual process that takes place. It is time-consuming and often dirty work, but the end results warrant the time, effort and money spent. After the presentation many of us felt inspired and I’m sure are looking at our own pieces a little differently.

Ramadan Recipes

Umm Ali

We had some delicious food at our Ranches Ladies Pre-Ramadan Iftar and some of the ladies have been kind enough to share their recipes. This week, we have Umm Ali made for the iftar by Rita using the recipe taken from RL member, Leila Barakat’s, book ‘Dishes Made Delicious.’

Ingredients:
4 medium croissants
4 cups milk
1 cup raisins
1 cup flaked almonds

1⁄2 cup liquid cream
1⁄2 cup sugar
1⁄2 cup pine seed

Method:

Cut the croissants horizontally and arrange in an oven proof dish
(preferably glass)
Mix the milk & sugar and bring to the boil. Add raisins then pour over the
croissants. Leave in the fridge for at least 30 mins.
Pour the cream over the mixture and cook in a hot oven until the milk
starts to boil and croissants turn golden.
Garnish with roasted almonds and pine seeds and serve at once.

New Circle – Dubai Marina Fitness Walking

Wednesday 20th March was the first (hopefully of many) walks in the Marina. There were 4 of us last week but I am sure it will grow in time. I intend to vary the route in time and when It is too hot to walk outside I will go into one of the Malls, either Ibn Battuta or Mall of The Emirates. The Marina is a great place to walk with plenty of shade and breeze. For anyone with children, under many of the bridges there are play areas that are fenced in to keep the children safe and also keep them out of the sun.
So if you fancy a change, please come and join me on a Wednesday morning.

Ramadan Kareem to all Ranches Ladies.

Ramadan Recipes

Arabic Oats and Meat Shorba

We had some delicious food at our Ranches Ladies Pre-Ramadan Iftar and some of
the ladies have been kind enough to share their recipes.

This week, we have Arabic Oats and Meat Shorba.

Ingredients:
2 onions
1 cup oats
2-3 minced garlic cloves
1 cup tomato paste fresh or canned
400 gm meat
1 tbsp powdered pepper
1 tbsp salt

2 maggi seasoning cubes
2 tbsp butter / vegetable oil/ olive oil
4 Cinnamon sticks
12 Peppercorns about
1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
7-8 cups water (or more accordingly)

Method:

In a wide and deep cooking pot, heat butter or oil. Add cinnamon stick and
peppercorns first. Next saute the onions and garlic for at least 2 minutes.
Add rest of the ingredients now including water. Cover it with a lid and let it
simmer on low flame for at least an hour until the meat becomes tender and
the soup gets thicker. The more the amount of oats added, the thicker the
soup will get. So add it according to your choice. If you do so, then increase
the amount of water and the other ingredients too. See to it that it is
simmered on a low heat. Oats render the thickness to it.
Keep stirring it at regular intervals to avoid it from burning or sticking to the
bottom. For a change, you can also add any of your favourite veggies.
Traditionally, it has nothing but meat and oats. But I do add some veggies
always. (like those of green peas and sweet corn)
Adjust salt according to taste. Serve it piping hot garnished with freshly
chopped coriander leaves.

Hiking Circle

Three Ranches Ladies in the Hiking Circle experienced one of the most enchanting landscape scenery in the mountains of Fujairah, a few days after the recent heavy rains. The trail was along a continuous stream of water which we had to cross several times , as well as wild delicate purple and yellow flowers dotted everywhere. The air was crisp and the wind gentle enough to distract one from realising the temperature was a touch too warm at 10am when we were on our route back to our parked cars. This Wadi Al Lyat trek has been newly added and it will remain a favourite for many trekkers for its surroundings and a beginner’s level rating when one just wants a less difficult hike than usual. Good Morning Ranches Ladies.

Ramadan Kareem to all Ranches Ladies members. May this blessed month of Ramadan bring joy, peace, harmony, and prosperity to all.

Pre-Ramadan Iftar

Last Thursday evening, nearly 30 Ranches Ladies joined the International Festive Food Circle for a pre-Ramadan Iftar gathering in Jackie Daair’s garden. Just before sunset, Saba gave us a brief overview of the significance of the Holy Month. Explaining that it was not only about fasting, Saba highlighted the very important aspects of prayer, self-improvement, kindness and charity. We then had the traditional coffee and dates, followed by soup and a fantastic array of dishes prepared by our members. It was a wonderful opportunity for the ladies to meet and chat in a very relaxed setting which was especially appreciated by the new members.

Many thanks to Carole for arranging, Jackie for hosting, to everyone for the amazing food and desserts and to all the ladies for making it such a memorable evening. Also, thanks to Ranches Ladies for sponsoring the evening and to our long-term discount partner, Xocolatl, for donating gift bags for all the ladies.

Lunch Circle

Last Monday 26th February, the Lunch Circle enjoy delicious food and great company at Cafe Belge in the Ritz Carlton, Gate Village DIFC. It was also great to catch up with former RL member, Sue Fulham, who is visiting Dubai.

Walking Fitness Circle

The Walking Circle are making the most of the cool weather with early morning walks on Mondays.

Meet on Monday mornings at 7am outside the main entrance of Arabian Ranches 1 community shopping centre.

We will walk for approximately 1 hour 20 mins depending on route and distance. Stay for tea/coffee afterwards back at the community centre if you have time. New ladies are welcome to join.

Inspiring women are many

Winning Nobel Prize and Grammy

But inspiring women around me I see

Over a simple cup of coffee or tea

Ranches Ladies are women of steel

They live their life with zest and zeal

They come from different cultures, but think alike

They walk, they swim, and they go on a hike

They do yoga, pilates and they dance

They’re out to have fun at every chance

Languages, poetry, cinema and more

Activities are in plenty, that’s for sure

Painting, quilting or playing a game

Whatever they do, the goal is the same

Whether it is Canasta, Shanghai or Mahjongg

Spend time constructively, nothing is wrong

Jewellery making in glitter and gold

Eager to meet in heat or cold

Mosaic, crochet, or a fancy meal

Being together for them is one big deal

They do things to follow their passion

Always looking trendy, wearing what’s in fashion

They are energetic, compassionate and kind

The best of company you will find

With open hearts they will reach out

Making friends is what it’s all about

Mutual respect and willingness to share

Enriching their lives with love and care

When they part, they’re eager to meet soon

Quilters Circle

The Quilters Circle met on the 19th of February. A team from the Brother Sewing Machine Company made a presentation on their cloud-based design platform Artspira. It was an interesting session with questions being answered on various Brother products too. This was followed by our usual ‘Show and Tell’ and ‘Block of the Month’ presented by our lovely group of ladies.
