Circles Coffee Morning – 21st March

Last weeks Circles Coffee Morning was a great opportunity for members and non-members to find out more about all our different activities. The team at Larte did a good job of the set up despite the rain.

Many thanks to Hayat, Jackie, and Josephine for organising, and Lisa for collecting memberships & making sure everyone was registered. Thank you to the Circle Leaders for all the effort they put into their circles year round!

Iftar Cancelled

Unfortunately, due to lack of interest, the decision has been taken to cancel the planned Ranches Ladies Iftar on Wednesday, 29th March 2023

Art Exhibition in Ajman

Saba Asim, RL member and Quilters Circle leader, is participating in an art exhibition hosted by the PaintBrush Art Community under the patronage of Ajman Tourism.

AYAH is an international Live art and exhibition providing a platform to emerging artists from across 7 nationalities to showcase their talent. The theme for this event is the Holy Month of Ramadan. It is open to the public from 19th March to 26th April at Bahi Ajman Palace Hotel.

Tuesdays at Larte

Ladies are welcome to continue meeting on Tuesday mornings during Ramadan at Larte, Studio One Hotel in Studio City, 10.30am to 12 midday. You can also join or renew your RL membership and find out about activities on offer.

Walking Fitness Circle

Come and join the Walking Circle while the weather is still not too hot. Meet on Mondays at 7.15am outside the main entrance of the Community Retail centre in Arabian Ranches to walk for around one hour. Tea/coffee in Costa afterwards at 8.15am.

Good Morning Ranches Ladies.

The Holy month of Ramadan is due to start on the 22nd or 23rd March. Ramadan Kareem to all.

The Dubai Oscars

On the same evening as the Hollywood Oscars, Carole and Jillie attended our very own Dubai Oscars. This was the finals of the ‘Short and Sweet Play Festival’ at the Junction, Alserkal Avenue, which ran for 8 weeks and showcased 88 plays with many of the scripts written by Dubai residents.

It was a Red Carpet Gala evening so we were able to dress up in our finery and bagged the front row. The only rule was that the length of plays should not exceed 10 minutes. There was an audience choice – where we could pick one of the 11 plays showcased each weekend, and judges choices – where several judges sat incognito in the audience and chose the plays they liked best. One week, there were 11 plays in different languages and other weeks there were themes such horror and romance.

Jilly and I attended 3 play evenings as well as the finals, and watched many awards given out. It is great to see such talent in Dubai. The two plays which won the judges choice were both in Hindi and for the people’s choice, one was in Hindi and one in English.

Iftar Meal – 29th March

Ranches Ladies is organising an Iftar for all Ranches Ladies members on Wednesday, March 29, 6pm at Sansation Restaurant in Arabian Ranches 2.

Please sign up as soon as possible, and at least by Tuesday, March 21st.

The restaurant may book up quickly for Iftar once Ramadam starts therefore if we do not have an indication / confirmation of numbers there may not be sufficient space available.

Book Circle

The Book Circle had a fabulous morning last Friday discussing “The End of Summer” with the book’s amazing author, Salha Albusaidy. The End of Summer deals with very difficult topics with humour and empathy, highlighting the need for better communication between generations which felt very relevant to all of us. As an extra bonus, she also sang for us! If you haven’t read The End of Summer it yet, pls do – it’s available in book stores, on Amazon and on Audible (read by Salha herself).

The Book Circle meet once a month, usually on the third Friday of the month at 9.30am, to discuss a book they have read.

Lunch Circle at Avli Restaurant

On 6th March, the Lunch Circle, led by Karen Weaving, went to Avli in the Four Seasons DIFC for their business lunch. The restaurant was marvellous and they had a great afternoon enjoying delicious food with beautiful ladies, building relationships and making new friends. A big thank you to Karen for organising.

Hiking Circle

The Hiking Circle are enjoying last few weeks of good weather to get outside. Here are some photos of last Thursday’s hike to Al Hamba Ravine. It was a great hike that included a walk through an orchard perfumed by the mature jasmine trees. At the end of the hike they visited the Fower Farm in Fujairah.

The Italian Circle is back and completely new! Join us on Wednesdays from 10 to 11 am and learn how to speak in Italian in a blink of an eye.

Every week we will improv real life situations through guided and non guided role plays. Amaze your friends with your Italian whether you’re going on a holiday or just to an Italian venue in Dubai! Don’t expect a traditional frontal lesson, you will be the star on stage! Warm up exercises to gain focus, concentration and free your creativity. Activities to learn vocabulary and grammar! Fun is guaranteed! All levels are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes.

The Italian Circle will be led by Paola and Nicoletta. Paola is a certified Italian teacher with 10 years of experience in Dubai.
Nicoletta is an actress with many years of experience in improv theatre and collaborates with Italian performers in Dubai.

The Literary Lunch Circle, led by Ashfaa, are reading the bestselling novel, Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. It follows the story of Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant chemist in the 1950’s and 60’s. who is forced to become a television chef when she finds herself a young, single mother.

A Weekend in Hatta

Since we moved to Dubai in 2019, we have enjoyed visiting different emirates in the UAE as a family, especially when international travel was limited during the pandemic. Although Hatta is only about 90 minutes drive from Dubai city, in the same emirate, this is the first time that we have been there.

Hatta, close to the Oman border, is a hidden gem in the UAE, so it is not surprising that the Dubai tourism board is promoting Hatta as a great place to visit. The landscape is quite unique, as there are mountains in almost any direction that you look. It was great to get out of the city, enjoy the fresh air and look up at mountains instead of buildings. It also makes a nice change from visiting the beach on a staycation. We found that the restaurants in Hatta were less expensive than in Dubai and the portions were bigger.

The highlight of our weekend was kayaking on Hatta Lake, which was formed by the construction of Hatta Dam. The lake is surrounded by mountains and the water, although very clean, appears a beautiful green turquoise colour. It is recommended to get to the lake in the earlier part of the morning to avoid queues and before the sun gets too hot.

We also visited Hatta Wadi hub, an activity centre which is great for kids, with climbing and other activities. Other activities available include hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and camping.

You can visit Hatta as a daytrip from Dubai, but it also makes a great weekend trip. It is a nice drive as you pass by the desert dunes and then into the mountains. If you want a longer trip, you could visit Hatta on the way to or from Fujairah or Oman.

St Valentine’s Morning at Larte with ‘The Wandering Chefs’

Well who could turn down a morning that included two Italian men cooking for us on Valentines Day?

We assembled at Larte from 10.30am and there was a buzz in the air and a sense of anticipation. We were guided to our tables which had been lovingly prepared for us with a choice of ingredients.

First things first, we donned our chefs hats and aprons and listened to Guiseppe and Geualdo… two Italian chefs from Sicily. They spoke to us about the benefits of eating local produce seasonally. Then we were given our own plates with pre-prepared dough. We were shown how to knead the air out of the dough and then top it with tomato sauce and our choice of mushrooms, olives, salami and mozzarella cheese. Thereafter, all that remained was to have our ‘masterpieces’ cooked in the pizza oven. This took only 5 to 10 mins. The aroma in the vicinity was delicious… we were all feeling hungry. Finally our pizzas were served and they were delicious! It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning with lots of banter, happy faces and stomachs.

New Beginnings

A poem by Rajul Chander

Poetry Circle member and Art Circle leader, Rajul, wrote this beautiful poem on the theme of New Beginnings, for the last Poetry Circle meeting.

Preface:

As there is light

After a dark night

As there is calm

After a storm

So also, for every ending there is a new beginning

Poetry:

Sometimes, life comes to an end when you lose someone dear

But then comes another time which brings you hope and cheer

I know of a friend who lost her soulmate in prime

But found a reason to live, as for her to sulk was a crime

She gathered her courage to smile and live

As to her children a fulfilling life she wanted to give

She said, if her children saw her looking lifeless and sad

It would remind them even more of their missing dad

She ventured out to find a purpose with that belief

She worked hard and in her creative pursuits she found relief

She let herself lose and went with the flow

And very soon one could see peace on her face and a glow

To glorify her love she wrote a book

Which touched many lives and reached every nook

She lived a life of dignity and peace

A new beginning she found to live thereafter in ease

Interior Design Presentation Coffee Morning

On Tuesday 24^th January a large number of Ranches Ladies and friends, attended the Coffee morning held at the Larte, Studio One Hotel, Studio City, where we were enthralled by a presentation given by an experienced and knowledgeable young lady called Marta Paloma of Interior Design Studio AM.

Marta explained many helpful and useful ideas on how to enhance and improve the overall look of a room by simple but very effective adjustments, resulting in outstanding and remarkable appearances.

For instance, the uniting of furniture with a rug or small carpet should be done by positioning the carpet underneath the front legs of a settee. Along with an idea regarding a rug in the dining room area and as to how it should be placed. Curtain rails should be placed a good foot above the frames of windows – a fact which seemed to have escaped the curtain firm who came to fit mine!

The use of mirrors and their placement can enhance rooms by optically giving the impression of enlarging the dimensions of a room, by reflecting and extending the refraction of light. Marta also mentioned complementing furnishings, using a colour wheel, or the use of monochromatic hues and shades.

Dressing a room is a personal choice, along with your choice of modern or classic furniture, that also applies to textures along with cushions.

Marta ended her talk by having a question and answer session which proved to be very interesting too. One particular idea was raised regarding metals. Apparently you don’t need to have one particular type of metal as it is acceptable to vary the metals without spoiling the overall presentation of a room.

I found the talk to be most interesting and I learnt a considerable amount. It was enlightening and gave us new ideas as to how to visualise and maybe revamp a room or two!

The 15th Emirates Airline Festival of Literature will be held between 1st and 6th February with events at both The Intercontinental Hotel in Dubai Festival City and the new Mohammed Bin Rashid Library in Al Jadaf.

Emirates LitFest is the Arab World’s largest celebration of the written and spoken word and one of the world’s leading international literary festivals, with around 250 local and international authors participating in around 300 sessions and workshops on a wide variety of topics. The Joys of Hiking in the UAE

As ladies, we all know that we should exercise to help with bone strength as we get older, and outside walking is one of the best and easiest ways to keep fit, both mentally and physically.

There is a lot to see and experience, once you get out of the city into the wadis and hills. During our hikes, we walk by farms and see goats, sheep, plants and trees, all growing naturally. We sometimes also spot rock pools with toads and fish.

I started hiking in the UAE regularly over a year ago with just a few of us and I admit, I felt embarrassed that I was not the fastest and that I was always huffing and puffing at the rear. Others would finish and dash off to do something else, whilst I reached the car totally exhausted and sweating. By the time I got home, my back and knees would hurt. So out came the icepacks, painkillers, and a darkened room, until I felt human again.

The great thing is no one ever made me feel bad for being so slow, they would encourage me and make conversation. I’ve made so many new friends of the trails, who I’d never had got to know otherwise.

I love the buzz I feel from being outdoors, so nature helps me overcome the pain. Watching a donkey with its young or seeing a goats skip makes my heart sing.

Over a year later, my muscles are stronger, my balance has improved and I‘m no longer tagging along, unless I choose to.

There is such a short winter in the UAE where we can be outside, and I want to enjoy it.

Come and join us in the Hiking Circle to make the most of the cooler months, get out of the city and enjoy the natural beauty of the UAE.

The Beach Walking Circle, led by Monika, at Kite beach (Blue Villas parking) on Tuesdays at 6.30am, walk for around 7-8 km and stop for coffee afterwards.
