Ladies Active Indoors

Every year, almost as soon as you’ve forgotten it, Dubai’s sweltering summer returns. As airport terminals fill up, those not heading home to family rush to find air-conditioned activities. When faced with the same quandary this year, I had the pleasure of joining Hiking Circle’s newest offshoot – Indoor Climbing.
Though previously not keen on climbing to new heights – I prefer to leave that to pilots, astronauts and Elon Musk – I jumped at the opportunity to try a new activity. Guided by our expert instructor, Nyi Nyi, from ECC Adventures, we started indoor climbing at Go Sports in Mall of Emirates.
With chalk in hand (I promise it’s worth it), Nyi Nyi ran us through the drill – teaching us the different types of knots used, how to anchor ourselves and set off on the wall. While it was a tough start (I have since learned we did not commence on the beginner’s wall!), the satisfaction of getting higher and higher, followed by the feeling of abseiling back to the solid ground was wonderful. It felt terrific reaching the top of the wall the first time and squealing, “I have done it!” However, we will need more practise before we start washing the windows on Burj Khalifa!
From late April until the end of June, different Ranches ladies came and went. Thankfully, I had a regular rock-climbing buddy in Mandy, and we were able to encourage and watch as we both improved over the weeks with the gentle guidance of Nyi Nyi, other staff and climbers.
Indoor Rock Climbing restarts later this month, and I would highly recommend it to all. It’s a different challenge, and if you’re 5’3 like me, you’ll enjoy finally seeing the view from up there! The next indoor climbing is planned for Wednesday 28th September 6-8pm at Go Sports, Mall of the Emirates. New members welcome, no experience required.
If you prefer solid ground, the Ranches Ladies Walking Circle has moved indoors until the cooler and less humid months, allowing us to keep walking year-round. We walk in Dubai Hills Mall, the newest of Dubai’s malls. We every Monday at 9 am, outside Marks & Spencer’s, for an hour’s walk. People walk at different paces and some days we may be more energetic than others, so everyone walks and their speed in groups of 2 or 3. And the best part? At 10 am, we convene at the M&S café for a lovely hot or cold beverage and social chat before heading home around 10.30 am.

London Reunion

Tuesday Mornings and Membership Renewals
Ranches Ladies are meeting on Tuesday mornings for coffee at Larte Restaurant in Studio One Hotel, Studio City (across the roundabout from the back entrance of Arabian Ranches 1) from 10.30am – 12pm. It is a great chance to catch up and find out about membership and activities.
If you have not yet renewed your membership, or you would like to join as a new member, you can do this at Larte Cafe, Studio One Hotel, Studio City on any Tuesday morning from 10.30am to 12 noon.

If you are unable to get to Larte on Tuesday morning to do your renewal, you can ask a friend to bring your form, copy of your ID and membership fee.

Ranches Ladies cannot run without the valuable work of our members who volunteer as board, committee members or helping out in other roles.
We still urgently need volunteers for 2 roles:
Membership Coordinators – to help sign up new members on Tuesday mornings and maintain membership list.
Web-team members – to help post to Social Media, respond to messages or update the website.

RL Circles News
The number of Circles activities are increasing so it is not possible to fit them all on the newsletter. See the Circles Calendar on the website for more details.
Walking at Kite Beach
Now that the weather is improving, the Beach Walking Circle, led by Monika, is planning to restart. They will meet at Kite beach (Blue Villas parking) on Tuesdays at 6.30am, walk for around 7-8 km and stop for coffee afterwards.

Art Circle
The Art Circle, led by Rajul, are meeting on Thursdays from 10am to 12 noon to learn new techniques and create beautiful paintings. New members welcome.

The Mosaics Circle, led by Ayesha, are meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9.30am till 1pm in Green Community East, DIP.

Quilters Circle
The Quilters Circle will be restarting their meetings in-person on the 3rd Monday of each month, beginning on 19th September, 10am.
The Quilters Circle have a separate membership under the umbrella of Ranches ladies. New members are welcome.

Gardening Circle
Are you struggling to adjust to gardening in Dubai’s climate? The Gardening Circle get together to share tips and discuss ideas. They are planning to meet on Friday 30th September at 9.30am. New members welcome.

Poetry Circle
The Poetry Circle, led by Carole, meet monthly to read and discuss poems on a theme. Their next meeting has been moved to Tuesday 20th September at 2pm (due to the Queen’s funeral Monday on 19th). The theme is ‘Dreams and Wishes’ New members welcome.

The Pilates Circle meet on Thursday afternoons 2-3pm, at Optimal Fitness in Studio City. Gillian from Optimal Fitness is teaching the class and there is space for more ladies to join.

Literary Lunch Circle
The Literary Lunch Circle, led by Ashfaa, meet over lunch to discuss a book they have read. Meetings are usually on the 3rd Monday of the month, but may change.
Before the summer break they read Songbirds by Christy Lefteri, but the discussion was postponed as many could not make it. The current book is The Marble Collector by Cecelia Ahern. Both books will be discussed on Monday 26th September, 12.30pm at the Ranches Golf Club Restaurant. New members welcome.
