Remembering Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II, who tirelessly served as Britain’s monarch and Head of the Commonwealth of Nations for just over 70 years died at the age of 96 on 8th September. The UAE joined many countries around the world in a period of mourning and paying tribute to the Queen, who His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE called a “close friend of the UAE.”
Ranches Ladies members have shared their thoughts and memories of the Queen, who will be greatly missed.
My Memories of the Queen

I don’t remember that much about the Coronation as we didn’t have a TV yet but I remember I was 8 and received a coronation mug with a tube of Merol sweets in it. Every child in Britain received a mug. There was a lovely song at the time:
“In a golden coach there’s a heart of gold driving through old London Town. Where the sweetest Queen the world’s ever seen, wearing her golden crown.”
I was to see the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh close up as they drove round the public park in Bonnyrigg when I was 14. I saw her with Prince Charles at the state opening of the new Scottish Parliament sitting in an open carriage driving up the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. She was wearing green and purple the colours of our Scottish thistle.
The last time I saw her was around 15 -20 years ago giving the new regimental colours to the Black Watch Regiment. She was wearing a deep pink wool coat and while petite looked much prettier than her photos with sparkly eyes. She seemed to have been everywhere and loved by everyone .

Nazreen shared a very special memory and photograph from her father. The photo below was taken during Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Bangalore in 1961, when her Dad (in the centre of the picture, looking towards the camera) welcomed the Queen in his capacity as a Minister of the state of Karnataka.
Tuesday Mornings and Membership Renewals
Ranches Ladies are meeting on Tuesday mornings for coffee at Larte Restaurant in Studio One Hotel, Studio City (across the roundabout from the back entrance of Arabian Ranches 1) from 10.30am – 12pm. It is a great chance to catch up and find out about membership and activities.
If you have not yet renewed your membership, or you would like to join as a new member, you can do this at Larte Cafe, Studio One Hotel, Studio City on any Tuesday morning from 10.30am to 12 noon.

If you are unable to get to Larte on Tuesday morning to do your renewal, you can ask a friend to bring your form, copy of your ID and membership fee.

Volunteers Still Needed!
Ranches Ladies cannot run without the valuable work of our members who volunteer as board, committee members or helping out in other roles.
We still urgently need volunteers for 2 roles:
Membership Coordinators – to help sign up new members on Tuesday mornings and maintain membership list.
Web-team members – to help post to Social Media, respond to messages or update the website.

We need more short (200 to 300 words) articles, with photos if possible, for the weekly newsletter. Can you contribute?

RL Circles News
The Circles Calendar for September 2022 is now on the website.
Here are some of the Circles activities on in September.
Walking Circle
During the hotter months, the Walking Circle have moved indoors. New ladies are always welcome to join.
Meet at Dubai Hills Mall outside Marks and Spencer’s at 9am to walk for one hour around the mall before the shops open. We stop afterwards for refreshments and a chat at the small cafe inside M&S – they offer a loyalty card to get a free tea or coffee after you buy 9 drinks, and great pastries for an only an extra 1 AED when you buy a drink.
Closest parking is via Entrance E, Sharaf DG Parking P1.

Art Circle
The Art Circle, led by Rajul, are meeting on Thursdays from 10am to 12 noon to learn new techniques and create beautiful paintings. New members welcome.

Indoor Climbing Circle
The Climbing Circle are planning to restart after the summer break, on Wednesday 28th September 6-8pm at Go Sports, Mall of the Emirates. New members welcome, no experience required.

Mosaics Circle
The Mosaics Circle, led by Ayesha, are meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9.30am till 1pm in Green Community East, DIP.

Quilters Circle
The Quilters Circle will be restarting their meetings in-person on the 3rd Monday of each month, beginning on 19th September, 10am.
The Quilters Circle have a separate membership under the umbrella of Ranches ladies. New members are welcome.

Gardening Circle
Are you struggling to adjust to gardening in Dubai’s climate? The Gardening Circle get together to share tips and discuss ideas. They are planning to meet on Friday 30th September at 9.30am. New members welcome.

Poetry Circle
Do you like poetry? The Poetry Circle, led by Carole, meet monthly to read and discuss poems on a theme. Their next meeting has been moved to Tuesday 20th September at 2pm (due to the Queen’s funeral Monday 19th). New members welcome.

The Pilates Circle meet on Thursday afternoons 2-3pm, at Optimal Fitness in Studio City. Gillian from Optimal Fitness is teaching the class and there is space for more ladies to join.

Literary Lunch Circle
The Literary Lunch Circle, led by Ashfaa, meet over lunch to discuss a book they have read. Meetings are usually on the 3rd Monday of the month, but may change.
Before the summer break they read Songbirds by Christy Lefteri, but the discussion was postponed as many could not make it. The current book is The Marble Collector by Cecelia Ahern. Both books will be discussed on Monday 26th September, 12.30pm at the Ranches Golf Club Restaurant. New members welcome.

Book Circle
The Book Circle, led by Jackie, meet once a month to discuss a book they have read over coffee.
Over the summer, they have been reading ‘Pachinko’ by Min Jin Lee and ‘Blood Orange’ by Harriet Tyce.
The next meeting is planned for Friday 16th September 9.30am at the Ranches Golf Club Restaurant, where these books will be discussed. They are also planning to talk about the Jubilee Reading List – seventy books from across the Commonwealth selected to make up a reading list commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. New members welcome.
