Good Morning Ranches Ladies. Hope you have a great week ahead.
Chocolate Ice Cream After school
By Tania Rocco
In the last few years, the constant in my life had been ‘building the future’ of my children and equipping them for the underlying edge the time is forcing on them.
There seemed to be a reason to panic: all the messages are surprisingly similar no matter the medium we read, watch, consult: the future of our children is uncertain, challenging in a way we, as parents, do not understand because our tools are not sharp enough for it.
How do I equip my children for this ‘uncertain’ future?
The recipe is simple it seems: More is better. More Technology and academics, loads of very diverse after school activities and for a well-rounded education, sending them to the other end of the world to do community service, encounter new cultures and real world issues and of course adding to all this lots of resilience (as if we can get resilience off the shelf).
Did I get the expected result? Are my children ready to face the big bad wolf? The bleak future? They might have more tools up their sleeve but one thing for sure, they were exhausted and miserable and we, as family, had gradually lost our connection, too busy living and building the future.
After a couple of alarming incidents, we decided that our children deserve better. This is not what we wanted for our children and for our family, so we toned down on the non-essentials.
And now, there is more passion and pleasure in what we do. The activities we practice are those we really enjoy. Traveling is in the same spirit: we enjoy discovering the world and it is not for a ‘higher’, futuristic, university targeted purpose. Most importantly, we relish each other’s company (most of the time).
As for our family, we seem happier: we have more time to hug, laugh, enjoy a silly tv show and a big chocolate ice cream after school rather than a daily rugby or gymnastics training.
And their future? My children are building it one day at a time embraced by our love and support.
