The Joys of Hiking in the UAE

As ladies, we all know that we should exercise to help with bone strength as we get older, and outside walking is one of the best and easiest ways to keep fit, both mentally and physically.
There is a lot to see and experience, once you get out of the city into the wadis and hills. During our hikes, we walk by farms and see goats, sheep, plants and trees, all growing naturally. We sometimes also spot rock pools with toads and fish.
I started hiking in the UAE regularly over a year ago with just a few of us and I admit, I felt embarrassed that I was not the fastest and that I was always huffing and puffing at the rear. Others would finish and dash off to do something else, whilst I reached the car totally exhausted and sweating. By the time I got home, my back and knees would hurt. So out came the icepacks, painkillers, and a darkened room, until I felt human again.
The great thing is no one ever made me feel bad for being so slow, they would encourage me and make conversation. I’ve made so many new friends of the trails, who I’d never had got to know otherwise.
I love the buzz I feel from being outdoors, so nature helps me overcome the pain. Watching a donkey with its young or seeing a goats skip makes my heart sing.
Over a year later, my muscles are stronger, my balance has improved and I‘m no longer tagging along, unless I choose to.
There is such a short winter in the UAE where we can be outside, and I want to enjoy it.

Emirates Literature Festival
1st – 6th February
The 15th Emirates Airline Festival of Literature will be held between 1st and 6th February with events at both The Intercontinental Hotel in Dubai Festival City and the new Mohammed Bin Rashid Library in Al Jadaf.
Emirates LitFest is the Arab World’s largest celebration of the written and spoken word and one of the world’s leading international literary festivals, with around 250 local and international authors participating in around 300 sessions and workshops on a wide variety of topics. Tuesdays at Larte
Join us for tea or coffee and a chat on Tuesday mornings at Larte, Studio One Hotel in Studio City, 10.30am to 12 midday. You can also join or renew your RL membership and find out about activities on offer.
Don’t miss the special event coffee mornings coming up on 24th January and 14th February.
Wanted – Newsletter Contributions

Gardening Circle
Following the Gardening Circle’s successful meeting on 13th January, Angelique from Agriculture Box has kindly offered to repeat her workshop on organic urban farming at her villa in Jumeirah on Friday 3rd February, for those who missed it.

Agriculture Box promotes planting in specially designed containers with a carefully balanced growing medium. An additional advantage of these containers is that they are light and easy to move around your garden or balcony.

Uni mums, led by Marina, are a group for those with grown-up children at college or university. They meet around once a term and have a WhatsApp group.
Spanish Circle
The Spanish Circle, led by Maria, are having fun while improving their Spanish. They meet in Dubai Marina with beautiful view over the marina. Thursday mornings for beginners and Friday mornings for beginners and intermediates.

The Art Circle, led by Rajul, have been busy creating beautiful paintings on different themes. New members are welcome.

Pilates Circle
Gillian from Optimal Fitness is teaching the Pilates circle on Thursday afternoons at 2pm, at Optimal Fitness in Studio City.
As there are now a lot of ladies coming, Gillian has offered to start a second class on Mondays at 10.30am, if there is enough interest.

Jewellery Clinic Circle
The next Jewellery Clinic Circle is planned for 25th January, 11am. Bring along any old jewellery that has sentimental value or some that you don’t wear anymore. Hayet can help you redesign it or fix it and enjoy wearing it again.

International Festival Lunch Circle
Carole organises the International Lunch Circle who meet around once a month to share the food and culture of members’ home countries. This year they are focusing around International Festivals.

Walking Fitness Circle
The Walking Circle meet on Mondays at 7.15am outside the main entrance of the Community Retail centre in Arabian Ranches to walk for around one hour. Tea/coffee in Costa afterwards at 8.15am.

Beach Walking Circle
