Good morning Ranches Ladies. Hope you had a great summer. If you have been travelling, welcome back to Dubai. Many Circles activities have restarted after the break and membership renewals are in full swing.
A Place to Call Home

As expats, our summer trips home are often accompanied by mixed emotions. Joy over reuniting with family and friends. The realisation that people and things have changed – or maybe it is you that’s changed? Sadness when we have to say goodbye again. Perhaps guilt over being so far away from ageing parents or college-age children, or tensions over unresolved relationship issues. It also brings to mind the question as to where is ‘home.’
It can take time until Dubai feels like home and even then the thought remains that one day you may have to leave. Long-term expats who have lived in different countries can develop the ability to live anywhere but may end up not feeling truly at home anywhere.
When my husband got a job in Dubai, I was unsure at first as when visiting on holiday I had mostly seen the more modern, glitzy side of Dubai rather than the local culture. However, once you live here for a while you get to realise that rather than a lack of culture, Dubai has an abundance of different cultures.
Dubai is a truly global city where around 85% of the population are expatriates from different cultures and religions, who coexist happily with tolerance and respect. Hospitality and generosity are two very important values in Middle Eastern culture. Emiratis value and practise their local traditions while also being proud to be a part of a city that embraces change and welcomes newcomers.
Living in Dubai, you can make friends from all over the world, as well as get to know local Emirati culture and traditions. You can experience a variety of cuisines, entertainment, art and music.
It may take some time, but Dubai can be a place you call home. You become an international citizen rather than a foreigner.
So, how do you make Dubai a place you can call home?
- Be open-minded and willing to learn.
- Get to know people from different countries and cultures.
- Make the most of the wide variety of international food, arts and cultural events in Dubai.
- Learn about Emirati history and culture.
- Even though English is the common language between people from different countries, try to learn some Arabic phrases, as well as other languages.
- Ranches Ladies is a great way to broaden your social network. Also consider joining other community groups or clubs according to your interests, such as sports, arts, literature or volunteering.
Life in Dubai, like anywhere else, is what you make it. Few cities in the world offer such an immense choice of experiences in one place. Living in Dubai can broaden your mind and expand your horizons.
Membership Renewals
The RL membership year runs from September to the following August and 2024-25 Ranches Ladies membership renewals have started.
Please come along to Larte Cafe, Studio One Hotel, Studio City (across the roundabout from the back entrance of Arabian Ranches 1) on any Tuesday morning from 10.30am to renew your membership. New members are welcome.

Women’s Wellness Day
