From Istanbul to Tbilisi: A journey by rail & bus across Turkey and Georgia

From Dubai to Istanbul: the amazing city of empires, littered with ancient Mosques & Palaces. Ferry ride across the Bosphorus Strait marks the city’s Europe & Asia sides. Delicious Tablaci salad, Sesame bagels, and all manner of kebabs!
Turkeys YHT train to Eskisehir then change to the Pamukkale Ekspresi to Denizli – an 8 hour train journey! There was no buffet, just a quick stop for coffee at a station kiosk. At Pamukkale we visited the Ancient Greek & Roman Spa town of Hierapolis nestled above the ‘Cotton Castle’ – white rocks formed by mineral springs which we walked over barefoot!
Train onto Ankara and then a bus to Goreme, the capital of the Cappadocia region. Famous for Byzantine sandstone caves formed out of volcanic cones. Peaceful walking tour along the Rose Valley and panoramic views of the ‘Fairytale Chimneys’ with its numerous grazing horses bee hives and olive trees. Enjoyed freshly squeezed pomegranate and red grapefruit juice whilst listening to the birds sing, Turkish coffee and sutlac: a cold rice pudding!
Bus back to Ankara and boarded the 24 hour Dogu Ekspresi Train to Erzurum. Comfortable 4 berth sleeper cabin. The train travelled through spectacular gorges, rivers and mountains whilst the buffet car served breakfast & rice kebab dinner with Ayran.
From Erzurum we caught buses to the Turkish Georgian border at Sarp and onto Batumi. Then our final train cross Georgia to Tbilisi for a guided tour of Georgia and its delicious food.
We became used to no Wi-Fi, shared facilities, and smiled at seemingly well cared for street dogs sleeping in the sun.
We thank the residents of Turkey & Georgia for many acts of momentary kindness, given to us non Turkish/Georgian speaking tourists!
Coffee Morning Presentation
Tuesday 11th June 2024
Ranches Ladies will be holding a special Coffee Morning Health & Wellbeing Presentation with Muriël from Balanced Space, on Tuesday, 11th June at Studio One Hotel, 2nd floor meeting room.
Craniosacral therapy is an alternative, noninvasive treatment that may help you relieve symptoms, especially pain. A trained healthcare provider will gently place their hands on your head, neck and back to alleviate tension.

Lunch Circle
Last Wednesday 29th June, the Lunch Circle enjoyed a delicious lunch at Duomo Italian Restaurant in the Edition Hotel Dubai. A great time was had by all.
The leader of the Lunch Circle, our own ‘Bonnie Lass’ to quote Robert Burns, Karen Weaving, is sadly leaving us to live to Thailand to be nearer her son. She has done a fantastic job for the past two years choosing very smart restaurants where we have enjoyed a variety of delicious lunches. The Italian lunch at Duomo in the Edition Hotel was no exception. Karen was presented with a pendant from a grateful Ranches Ladies and a necklace of green beads from the whole of the Lunch Circle. There was also a bouquet of flowers from Karen Richardson and friends. Enjoy Thailand Karen and don’t forget to stopover and visit us.

Decoupage Circle
The Decoupage Circle, led by Randa, have now moved on to their second project and are decorating trays.
The Decoupage Circle meet Thursday mornings, 10am – 1pm in Arabian Ranches.

The theme for the last Poetry Circle, on Monday 27th May, was ‘Love.’
The Poetry Circle usually meet once a month to share and discuss poems on a theme.

The Literary Lunch Circle are reading ‘Maybe in another life’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and they plan to meet on Monday 24th June to discuss this. New members welcome.

The Book Circle are reading ‘Behold the Dreamers’ by Imbolo Mbue – a powerful and timely story of marriage, class, race and the pursuit of the American Dream.

The Art Circle, led by Rajul, had a great class last Thursday, with ladies working on a variety of themes.
