Author Talk: ‘How I came to be the UAE’ with Paulette Buizer

On Tuesday April 23^rd2024, Ranches Ladies were delighted to welcome the author Paulette Buizer to present and talk about her book HOW I CAME TO BE THE UAE.

Paulette, a native of Canada and a teacher of English, accepted a post to teach English in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, ending up teaching in public schools in Al Ain for 8 years. She found that the teaching methods were somewhat outdated and she spent a lot of time producing her own teaching materials to make her lessons more interesting in an effort to engage the students further.

During this time she realized that her Emirati students actually knew very little about their ancestors and their heritage, while she herself was very curious about the history of this area and how it came to be the amazing country it is today. The idea for a book was born!

Returning to Canada, she embarked on a programme of research dating back to the 1880’s when this land was mostly populated by nomadic Bedouin tribes, and Abu Dhabi and Dubai were small fishing villages. The introduction of pearl diving then began a lucrative pearl trade between the Emirates and other countries .

Then oil was discovered! Changes took place at a terrific speed bringing us to the country we know today and which many of us call home, thanks to the hospitality and generosity of the Emiratis.

Paulette pays homage to the late Sheikh Zayed ,who never lost his love of the desert and old traditions yet managed to wisely guide the leaders of the 7 Trucial States, as they were called at the time, to become united in 1971 and move forward together under his rule.

The narrator of the story is the UAE itself , displaying pride, like a mother, in the achievements of its people. With excellent illustrations by Paulette’s niece, Emily Baker, the combination makes for an easy, informative read.

Back in the UAE to tour and promote her book in schools, we wish Paulette the very best of luck.

(I bought two books for my grandchildren who, although living here, know very little about the history of their host country!)

• Cancellations :
o Cancellations made at least 72 hours prior to tour departure is eligible for 100% refund
o Cancellations made at least 48 hours prior to tour departure: eligible for 50% refund.
o Cancellations made within 24 hours tour departure will be 100% charges and not eligible for refund-NO SHOW.
• If you fail to join the experience or leave it prior to its completion, no refund can be made.
• No swapping of guests is allowed as the guest id’s will be in the record as per the company and flying requirements.
