Indonesian Lunch

Last Monday, 20 ladies from the International Lunch Circle enjoyed an Indonesian lunch at Farah’s place. She had prepared a tumpeng – an Indonesian celebration dish which always starts with a cone of rice in the middle on a bed of palm leaves then is decorated with various types of food eg fried chicken, krupuk, quails eggs , shredded coconut etc. Farah decorated the tables and the walls with various batik cloths and decorations, for which Indonesia is famous. She also showed the ladies traditional Javanese dress and wedding dolls. Afterwards we danced the ‘Poco poco’ an Indonesian line dance in the garden. Thank you Farah for a wonderful cultural experience.
A big thank you to Farah for her wonderful hospitality and cooking. Farah is leaving Dubai next month and we wish her well on her next venture.
Indonesia in the 1980s
I moved to Jakarta Indonesia in 1980 when I was 35. I had to look it up on the map to see where it was! I spent 9 wonderful years there. Part of my time was spent as a member of WIC the Women’s International Club. This was a large club with its own clubhouse given by the government and started in 1947 after Indonesia became independent. There were 700 members, 350 Indonesians and up to 25 from each foreign country. I taught tap dancing and Scottish dancing to the club ladies and became a member of the board the last 2 years I was there. I was the Circle Leader and had 39 circles to nurture, all free, some on the clubhouse and some in houses or other locations. The highlight of my time was being invited to Ibu Tien’s( Suharto’s wife) house for morning tea with the board as she was the honorary President and opened the annual charity bazaar. She had cupboards full of different coloured glassware which she collected. I have enclosed photos of meeting Ibu Tien, my tap dance class , and me in different Indonesian outfits whenever they did a cultural morning from different parts of Indonesia. It was an amazing experience.

Reel Palestine Film Festival

Mental Health Workshop – Tuesday 23rd January
This Tuesday, 23rd January, we have a special coffee morning, with a talk on mental health by Sara Haboubi – NLP Master Coach and Trainer. This will be on the 2nd floor in Studio One Hotel (not in Larte this week).

Hiking Circle
The Hiking Circle are continuing to make the most of the cooler months to get outside. They have been hiking in Fujairah and other places in the UAE. On the way to Fujairah, they witnessed a beautiful sunrise on Sharjah-Fujairah border.

Quilters Circle
Ranches Ladies President, Hayet, would like to thank the Quilters Circle for inviting her to their monthly meeting last week. At the meeting, C&C Creative, a newly formed initiative with a mission to unite creative talents in the Artisan community, was introduced. Their goal is to foster collaboration among artists encouraging them to work together on projects that will ultimately benefit the broader artistic community within Ranches Ladies, locally in Dubai, and beyond. C&C creative passionately promotes up cycling and sustainability while embracing the rich tapestry of local traditional crafts, seamlessly weaving them into a modern fashion and design statements. All Ranches Ladies Creative circles are welcome to join in this venture.

Art Circle
The Art Circle had a lovely class last week, with most ladies working on a common project.
The Art Circle, led by Rajul, meet on Thursdays from 10am to 12 noon. They are creating some beautiful paintings and experimenting with new techniques. New members are welcome.

Poetry Circle
The topic for the last Poetry Circle meeting, last Wednesday, was music. Judith, a former member of Ranches Ladies, and her husband joined us for the poetry session.

Walking Fitness Circle
The Walking Circle are enjoying early morning walks on Mondays.
Meet on Monday mornings at 7am outside the main entrance of Arabian Ranches 1 community shopping centre.
We will walk for approximately 1 hour 20 mins depending on route and distance. Stay for tea/coffee afterwards back at the community centre if you have time. New ladies are welcome to join.

Jewellery Clinic Circle and Open House
If you have a piece of jewellery that has sentimental value or some that you don’t wear anymore and would like to give them a new life, then the jewellery clinic circle is your answer. Hayet can help you redesign it or fix it and enjoy wearing it again.
The next Jewellery Clinic and Open House is planned for Thursday 25th January from 10am to 5pm, in Arabian Ranches 1. Come along for a free jewellery up-cycling consultation, and browse a range of hand-made items.
