Ranches Ladies Newsletter

Good Morning Ranches Ladies. Hope you have a great week.
Story Telling Circle: Celtic Brooches
by Carole Binbrek

The topic of the monthly Story Telling Circle this month was Jewellery. I gave a talk on Celtic Brooches and showed the ladies my brooch collection, which was mainly Celtic brooches.
Celtic brooches were made as far back at 2000 BC. They were made of bone and iron initially and were used by the Celts; a people from central Europe who moved to Wales, Ireland and Scotland. They used the brooches mainly to fasten their cloaks before the invention of buttons and zips. They were very popular in the 8th to 10th centuries and were then made of bronze, gold and silver and showed a mark of social rank.
Today, Celtic brooches are used by the Scots and the Irish to fasten their plaids and sashes. Scottish country dancers use them to fix a sash at shoulder level. Highland dancers used them to fix their plaids at the shoulder and smaller ones on their hats. Pipers and drummers have large brooches to fix their plaids as well. They can also be used just as a decoration for a jacket or blouse etc.

Here is a photo of the former Ranches Ladies Scottish dancers wearing Celtic brooches. I still use them for going to formal Scottish events when I am wearing a sash.

Lynne and Inna from the Story Telling Circle are wearing Celtic brooches with silk evening sashes. Hayet made the lovely matching necklace which Lynne is wearing for me to wear at formal Scottish events.

This is a photo of me in my first kilt. Note the brooch at my shoulder and in my hat.
The plume or feather brooch in my collection (first photo) is also very popular. Highland dancers used to wear them in their hats. Nowadays they are worn as brooches. The small brooches are for fastening a sash at the hip to the lady’s dress to keep it in place while dancing.
