My Trip to Cambodia and Vietnam

by Kumkum Ramchandani

Angkor Wat Temple

Our Cambodia/Vietnam trip was planned for 2020 when the pandemic struck. Finally, after two years, it was revived as Covid appeared to be abating. We set out in November 2022 with two close friends, a little apprehensive, but excited too!

Cambodia is a country steeped in culture and history, we found. As we woke up before dawn to see the ruins of the temple Angkor Wat illuminated by the rising sun, rubbing the sleep from our eyes, grumbling at the early hour, little did we realize that we would be witnessing one of the most beautiful sights ever. The ancient but well preserved ruins stretching over acres and acres of land were bathed in glorious orange, lending them a stunningly mysterious ethereal glow.

Angkor Wat was built over 1000 years ago by the Hindu king Surya Vardan before the advent of Buddhism. The glorious temple is home to both statues of Hindu gods and shrines of Buddhist figures, many of which are either skilfully restored or present in their original glory.

Cambodian cuisine is an eclectic mixture of Chinese and Indian flavours. As newly minted vegetarians, we found the exquisite tastes of fresh vegetables and coconut based sauces delightful to the palate.

Then to the Killing Fields and the demonic reign of the Khmer Communist leader Pol Pot who had thousands of intellectuals brutally killed to usher in an era of agrarian labour. The huge piles of skulls and skeletons, which we were not allowed to photograph, are an enduring testimony which the world is not allowed to forget. Many people had tears in their eyes as they toured the site where the brutalities were spelled out for all to remember and mourn.

Cambodian people are friendly and humble and it is reported that the country is the second safest in the world for women travelling solo. Visiting Pub Street, a buzzing tourist area and travelling everywhere by tuk tuks are a must!

Vietnam, by contrast, is a teeming country where consumerism and development go hand in hand with ancient culture. Designer boutiques jostle with brilliantly decorated pagodas. We stayed in state of the art five star hotels bestowed with every luxury imaginable. The highlight of our stay was Halong Bay near Hanoi, which is an island with over 1000 mini islands. An overnight stay aboard a luxury boutique boat was a fitting end to a hectic trip. Imagine, we took eight flights in eleven days which were strenuous but necessary to see as much as we could!
