Hope you have a great week.
Feature on The Hiking Circle by Mandy Peden
The idea for the Hiking Circle began when a few of us were chatting about where to find hiking trails and groups, but we didn’t do anything about it for a while. I had seen an advert for a weekend hike and kept thinking, “next week”, or thinking I’d do this by myself. Then I met a new RL member, Tracy, who wanted to form a ladies hiking group and hire a qualified guide. I was like a kiddie saying “YES please!!”
We went on a couple of hikes and one of them was with the company ECC Adventures. Neither of us knew the trails well enough to take anyone else without getting hopelessly lost, and using them would be more cost effective than hiring a personal guide. ECC prefers the little known trails, using experienced well trained guides.
The Hiking Circle has gradually grown, with more Ranches Ladies joining each week. We have enjoyed the UAE outdoors, searching for toads and snakes, seeing goats and donkeys, identifying plants, trees and rock formations, climbing and sliding down rocks. We really stretched our fitness levels, while having great chats with a few laughs along the way. At the end of the trail we got back to the vehicles with relief, removing our rucksack and hiking boots. Then sitting a while with a cup of tea or coffee, and biscuits to reflect on the morning, before the drive home and back to real life.
Then March came, along with the heat, and by midday it was getting harder, so one by one we dropped out. Not wanting to stop meeting up with each other, the Thursday Beach Walk started, which Monika organises. Now ECC Adventures have started indoor climbing sessions that a few of us will join at the end of April, so who knows, next winter there could be a Ranches Ladies Climbing Circle!!
More contributions wanted
We want to hear from you!
Mandy’s post on The Hiking Circle is hopefully the first of regular newsletter features. All RL members, past or present, are invited to share short feature pieces on topics such as:
- What you have been getting up to in your Circle groups
- Your favourite place in Dubai or wider UAE
- Reviews/recommendations for restaurants or leisure activities
- How you and your family celebrate cultural or religious festivals in Dubai
- Your experience of relocating to or from Dubai
…..plus any other topics you think would be of interest to RL members
These need only be short (200 to 300 words) and if you also have photos or images that would be great.
